Week 3 – The Body Shop Advent Calendar!

The thought of waking up and not having a little present each morning is a bit sad but I’ve really enjoyed opening my advent calendar! There have been some great skincare and bath things in the calendar and it all looks excellent quality. I’ve also started thinking about different ways I can use the box after…I’ll do a little post on this after!

So here I can show you the things I have got in the 12th – 19th days of Christmas!

The Outfit and Make Up I Wore to my Work Christmas Party!

Tis the season for office work parties, tra la la la la laaaa la la la la! The very meaningful decision of what to wear comes to the fore and you’re left with a predicament. This post is by no means a guide of what to wear but it will how you what I decided to wear to my work Christmas Party, and how to get the look if that’s what you’d like :).

When you have a work/office Christmas Party, consider the venue. Mine was quite a corporate event so I decided a black outfit was what I would go for. I wanted something smart but still quite glamorous, so I opted for a bardot style top, with an above knee length skirt that had a black feather frill. I love this little detail on this skirt – it just adds a touch of chicness to the outfit in a really subtle way. Paired with some nude platform high heels and a statement necklace, it’s a simple outfit but I think it looked quite appropriate! Ignore the dirty mirror…

Here are the shoes…which I did manage to walk in for ALMOST the whole night!:

For make up, I wanted some dark smokey eyes but paired with a very nude simple lip. For eyes, I used the MAC Painterly Paint Pot as my base and started to blend some Black from the Lorac Pro Palette into the crease.

I applied Matte Liquid Eyeliner from Maybelline along my lash line and did a small flick, and applied some Glitter Eyeliner (which is also from Maybelline) over the top. Lashes were Red Cherry Wispies and I smudged some of the black eyeshadow along my lower lash line too :).

I hope you guys have enjoyed this post!

Let me know what you wore to your Christmas parties…:)

Why I’m Obsessed with Instagram…

If anyone follows me on Instagram, they’ll know that I quite like it. I post a lot and I usually go on it around 2 – 3 times a day. Go through my feed and double tap on anything that takes my fancy, it’s such an EASY way to explore photography and it fits right into our convenient, time limited day to day lifestyles.

It gives you the opportunity to experiment with photography and you don’t even need a big fancy camera in order to do it – I find my iPhone 6s camera is just right.

IMG_7606

One of my favourite things about Instagram is when you come across a great account that shows sped up make up tutorials. Make up feeds are my favourite kind to browse through and I’ve tried my hand at some close up pictures too but am still practising! For those I tend to ignore my front camera and use a mirror so that I can use my back camera instead which is much much better quality.

I like following large brands Instagram accounts because it’s a great way of finding out what their newest products and sale offers are – some of my favourites are Essie, Bombay Hair, Nars, Benefit and Make Up Geek (which I’ve just heard that you can get on Beauty Bay!).

Have you guys got any favourite Instagram accounts you can recommend following? 🙂

No Kink Bobbles – Do they work?

So I’ve been curious about these little coils of plastic for a long time – the ones I have pictured aren’t branded Invisibobbles, I bought mine from Accessorise to try! They were around £2.50 – £3 and came in gorgeous two tone shades <3.

After a quick google I’ve found that these are called ‘Telephone Ponies’ – WTF.

invisibobbles

(My favourite is the blue and green one :))

The whole point of these coily little wonders is that you can tie your hair up without snagging it or creating knots, and it DOESN’T leave a massive kink!

I find that sometimes if I have used a normal hair band I will more often or not get a massive kink – no matter where abouts I put it. From the moment I started using these, I was impressed at their strength. I thought to myself – these are just coily bits of plastic! Now, because I have quite thick hair the only criticism I have is that they stretch quite easily and don’t go back into such a tight coil.

Considering that my hair is quite thick, they are surprisingly strong! It helps that they are tightly coiled in the first place, but as I said they do stretch quite easily (maybe the branded ones are better!).

But what I can say is that they do serve their purpose! They do hold hair well and I’ve not seen a kink as I’ve taken my hair down. I’m pleased with these and I do find myself reaching for them over normal hair bands.

They were quite a bargain too so I wouldn’t mind repurchasing them if they did end up stretching too far 🙂

The Pro’s and Con’s of Henna/Mehndi

Everywhere I look on Instagram, there are pictures of henna designs and patterns – particularly white henna! In Gujarati we call it mehndi, but I think it’s more commonly known as henna. We recently had mehndi done for my sister’s wedding and a wedding is the traditional reason that you get it done!

When brides get mehndi done for a wedding, usually they hide the groom’s initial in amongst the patterns and he has to find it on the wedding night :D. As you will see, there is just a flower in mine! Lol

I’m not entirely sure how the white mehndi and glitter mehndi works but the colour in traditional brown henna temporarily dyes the skin and it gradually fades off your hands/feet/wrists as you continue to wash (if you do wash, that is :)).

Here is a picture of the beautiful mehndi that I had done last week! mehndi

Having mehndi done is great, it looks so pretty and it can be delicate and intricate, however there are pro’s and con’s for this special beauty treat.

THE PRO’S:

  1. It lasts for at least 4 – 5 days, so the time invested in having someone do it for you is definitely worth it! Especially if you are having it done for a special event such as a party, birthday or wedding!
  2. It looks great in photos! The picture above shows the mehndi when the product is still on the hands, this layer dries and crumbles off and the finished result is an orangey brown colour.
  3. Pairing it with a good manicure means you can make your hands look very elegant!

NOW…ONTO THE CON’S:

  1. It stinks
  2. If you leave it on overnight you’ll find 10 million dried up crumbs of it in your bed and on your floor
  3. You can’t do anything for about 4 hours (this could be a good thing too though!)
  4. It really stinks – especially if you catch a waft as you are doing your make up or something
  5. The fading mehndi isn’t the greatest look!

I hope you have enjoyed reading this post – If you’ve had mehndi done before you’ll know where I’m coming from! Hahahah

Almost 5 Months of Youtube…what have I learnt?

I’ve been doing Youtube videos for almost 5 months now and I thought I’d jot down some of the things I have found out as I thought this might be useful for any other Youtube newbs or bloggers thinking about expanding into having a Youtube channel.

It’s a great outlet to be creative on, especially when it comes to editing etc but it can take some time to start a video from the very beginning to finishing it completely.

Here’s a quick run down of the things I have found out/learned/thought about sporadically:

Filming is time consuming but totally satisfying

I love the process of filming, but just bear in mind that things like tutorials can take a lot of time to prep and film and edit. It helps to plan your looks in advance and just get out the products that you know you are going to use…this helps cut down editing time because you won’t then have around 12 mins of footage where you are scrambling around trying to find that mascara you want to use.

Writing tags is the most boring thing on this here planet Earth

I don’t know why the suggested tags on Youtube aren’t better but doing tags is bloody boring. I know it’s important and all that blah blah but even when blogging I hate doing it! I know I sound like an ungrateful sod and first world problems etc but it doesn’t take away from the fact that typing in words when it’s not a post ISN’T FUN. It’s just necessary.

Don’t expect each video to get 1000’s of views straight away

This isn’t a deterrent to say ‘don’t do youtube’ just be very mindful that when you are starting out it’s going to be difficult to get views unless you are Kylie Jenner. Think of ways you can direct traffic to your videos…it might be using Instagram and using BitLy to shorten your URL’s, or Twitter or directing traffic using your blog. Make sure your channel looks great and always make sure you link to your previous videos at the end of the one you have put up.

Be aware of true and sub 4 sub subscribers

There isn’t anything wrong with this at all because a lot of people use this tactic, but sub 4 subbing is a way of people getting subscribers fast basically. Everyone does it, so don’t be down trodden if you get people leaving comments openly saying ‘sub 4 sub?’ because at least they are being honest about it. I’ve done it the odd time but it feels weird so I try not to.

Enjoy it!

More than anything, I’ve learnt that Youtube is actually really fun and a great outlet for creativity. I love putting up a well edited video, or a make up tutorial that I’m particularly proud of. I guess blogging/social media/youtube is quite a self gratifying thing to do but when you get comments, likes and views it is really satisfying to know that people like what you have created!

To end this post, I’m going to leave you with a collage of my favourite video’s I have filmed…if you click it you will go straight to my Youtube channel so if you want to you can have a browse!

My Obsession with Dainty Jewellery

Hello Everyone!

I have an obsession with dainty jewellery, particularly necklaces and earrings. I think there’s something so beautiful about a slim, delicate chain with a small, simple pendant. On asian skin as well, bright golds and silvers look really pretty!

The shops that I think are best for dainty, delicate jewellery are probably the usual suspects: Accessorize, H & M, and Topshop! I think gold is my favourite style, with silver and copper coming a close second. I have a picked a selection of my MOST favourite pieces for you to peruse below:

handm

This necklace is my most recent purchase, from H & M (I think it was around £4.99). This is quite a pale coppery colour, and it has a really thin chain and a simple horse shoe and circle design. The only thing I get annoyed about is untangling it!

turkeynecklace

This is one of my favourites 🙂 this necklace I bought when I went to Turkey with my sister. The shop was quite big, but it was run by a very old man with a white beard and shuffly sandals on. This is a REALLY thin gold ball style chain, with a bright blue and silver round pendant. The chain is so delicate that I have to be quite careful with it as I’m always scared it’ll snap!

topshop

I’m so pleased with how this photo turned out! This necklace is a beautiful chain with triangular amethyst stones. I like how there are 5 (an odd number always looks very satisfying) and the chain again is very dainty and thin. I love the bright purple of the stones against the coppery/gold chain.

accessorizez

This last necklace is from Accessorise, part of their ‘Z’ collection. The jewellery from the ‘Z’ range is a bit more expensive, but the pieces are usually so beautiful and dainty that I think it’s definitely worth it. The stones on this necklace are like a light aqua blue, so set against the bright almost yellowy gold it’s really striking. Something about it makes me think of Greece, they carry that style through to the packaging and font in the range design so I love that all the pieces are designed within the same style.

What is your favourite from the bunch? Or are you the opposite and loving in your face blingy necklaces and earrings?!

Roshni 🙂 xxx

Battle of the Texturising Sprays

My hair is short, so doing things to make it look different is quite hard.

I tend to straighten it almost every day, at the weekend I give it a bit of a rest and it’s usually scraped up with a few pins in it to cure my mullet syndrome (not all of the hair fit in so I get a little tail at the bottom).

One thing I like to use is a texturising spray once it is straightened, which gives my hair more oomph and volume. I have two to review for you today, one of which is the spray I tend to reach for more often and the other one has it’s pros but it disappoints in the performance factor.

Round 1…ready…FIGHT!!

battleofthetexture

The L’Oréal #TXT Texture Styling spray is designed to add volume without the backcombing. This is a thin tall bottle so it feels like you are still getting quite a lot of product which is great.

It sprays nicely and it smells so so lovely! The smell is what makes me keep using this, as unfortunately it doesn’t really do what it says on the bottle. At first, when you spray this into your hair and foof it up a bit your hair looks great, but it definitely doesn’t last very long.

I usually use this by lifting up the top section of my hair all around my head and spraying this into the root and the length all the way around. This way the top layer of hair doesn’t get too much product in it and it still holds the texture (if you’re using the right spray :)).

The other spray is called BlowPro (curious name, I know). This spray is much more pricey than the L’Oréal one (that one’s only £3.79 whereas the BlowPro was around £10 (click here for a link but I’m not sure if Superdrug sell it anymore :()

The BlowPro spray gives out a much finer mist, which I think I prefer. What I love about this one in particular is that I can spray it in in the morning, go to work and look in the mirror and I can see that it’s still working it’s magic :).

BLOWPRO

SO, at the end of that battle the Blow Pro Textstyle Texturising Spray is the winner (applauds).

The claim on the bottle is accurate, so I’m pleased. It’s just a shame it’s almost finished now…

Have you used any great texturising sprays?
