The Battle of the Highlighters

Battle of the Highlighters

A few years ago, if someone said I’d be highlighting my face I’d be thinking of something neon pink that belongs in the stationary drawer. Fast forward to 2016 and highlighting is a vital step in most make up wearer’s routines.

When choosing your highlighter I would consider the following things:

  • The formula – cream or powder?
  • The glitteriness – do you want something subtle or IN YO FACE
  • How much you want to spend
  • Whether you want it to be warm toned or cool toned

These sound like scary decisions but actually it’s pretty simple – there are so many affordable highlighters nowadays that it doesn’t have to be a decision that bursts the seams of your purse *great mental image there*

My top picks are in the picture above!

For a iridescent but long lasting highlight I use the Benefit Girl Meets Pearl liquid highlighter which looks like a unicorns barfed it up (by that I mean it looks FABULOUS) – it’s more a cool toned lilac filled highlighter that you can just dab along the high points of your cheeks and then dot down the centre of your nose if you like. This is a click up dispenser bottle and this is a great, tidy way of using it.

For a more subtle highlight that costs a little more (but you get contour too) you could go to Charlotte Tilbury and opt for the Filmstar Bronze and Glow. This medium toned highlight in the duo is SO finely milled it’s really beautiful. Sometimes I wonder if the highlight is TOO finely milled but maybe it’s just me who wants to look like a glitter ball. Lol.

Finally, for the most glitzy highlight you can go for the MAC Soft and Gentle Mineralise Skin Finish. This is probably my favourite highlighter and in my mind I guess I call it the ‘Going Out Highlighter’ lol. The glittery particles in this are larger than other highlights but this still creates a gorgeous gold toned glow on your cheekbones when applied with a feathery make up brush.

What’s your favourite highlighter?

Two Faced ‘Better Than Sex’ Mascara Review – New Video!

I was roaming round Debenhams as you do and when I saw the Too Faced counter it reminded me that I had never actually tried anything from their range. There are lots of products that have introduced me to a range – Nyx Soft Matte Lip Creams, Clinique Moisture Surge Gel Cream, Estée Lauder Double Wear Foundation – THE LIST GOES ON.

The Too Faced (I keep going to write Toof Faced but that’s something else) ‘Better Than Sex’ mascara was a great entry product for me to try. I have seen it a lot in Youtuber’s haul and review videos and it’s probably been following me around on Instagram too. In this post I have included MY own Youtube video review for this mascara, go give it a watch!

I was pleased to say when I bought it from Debenhams I had a £5 Beauty Card loyalty bonus thingymajiggle so that made me happy!

Don’t worry though, I tell you ALL about the mascara in my latest video! BUT even more importantly, if you want a clear before and after watch the video to see me apply it there and then :). Please give it a like if you enjoyed my ramblings!

Make Up Geek Eyeshadows + Swatches

makeupgeek

For the first time in Roshni Reviews history (this is a big thing) I have tried the eyeshadows from the American beauty brand Make Up Geek!

The only thing I had tried before from Make Up Geek was one of the sparklers (a loose glitter) which took some getting used to but was pretty impressive when I worked out how to use it! You can read my review of that here…

Until recently Make Up Geek was hard to get hold of here in the UK, but then BeautyBay.com started to sell their products and everyone has gone mad for them.

I had heard SO much about the pan eyeshadows from Make Up Geek being REALLY pigmented, smooth and blendable so I just had to try them. They are quite reasonably priced I would say – much more inexpensive compared to MAC or Urban Decay but with those brands I’d say you are paying for the name in part.

My eyeshadows cost £4.95 for the matte and duo chrome shadows and then £7.95 for the foiled eyeshadow. (I almost forgot to put the . in there so it looked like £795. Damn that’s expensive).

The first shade I got was a Foiled Eyeshadow in the shade ‘In The Spotlight’ (pictured above yo) which is a beautiful peachy gold shimmer shade. This is SO BRIGHT – I haven’t yet tried these shadows on my lids yet but I have swatched them and been amazed at the pigmentation!

The second shade I got was a matte shade called ‘Bitten’. This is a gorgeous and understated red/brown crease shade. The texture of these is so buttery – I think because of this there is a little bit of fall out but I think I could deal with that.

make up geek bitten

This shade will be really useful as a pop of colour in the crease – I think it will come off more brown than anything but you can’t beat a good brown in your collection!! Especially a warm one…

Finally I bought a duo chrome shade called ‘Secret Garden’ which has green and blue/brown flecks running through it and it looks really beautiful as an all over lid colour.

make up geek secret garden

I am impressed with these so far and will definitely post a tutorial on a look using them OR do a video on my channel swatching and using them!

Speaking of which, here are the swatches of these lovely shades…the palette I am storing them in is actually one I made for a measly £1.85!! I showed you in a post how I made it here, as Z palettes are so bloody expensive for what they are.

Have you tried any Make Up Geek eyeshadows? Are there any other shades I should try/lust over?!

What’s In My Make Up Travel Bag?

I’ve been pretty busy the last few weekends and it’s made me realise that recently I have probably done the best in terms of trying to condense down my make up bag :). I thought I’d share with you the products that I’ve chosen that have pride of place in my make up bag when I am off on my travels on a weekend away or hen do like the weekend just gone!

I try to travel as light as possible and usually try to take multi tasking products – some of which you will recognise as I more than likely will have already spoken about them before.

My make up bag of choice is the Zoeva Rose Gold clutch that my make up brush collection came in.

Not only is it beautiful, but it’s the perfect size for storing a few choice make up tools and the essential things that ensure you can get your face from zombie to flo’less without having to carry shed loads.

travel make up1

travel make up2

When it comes to skin I have a few products that might be small but make a big difference to my make up.

The Esteé Lauder foundation I use is the Double Wear, which comes in a beautiful frosted glass bottle – NOT appropriate for travelling. Especially with the turbulence it would experience being banged about and hurled up stairs in Tube stations (poor little bottle). So I decanted some of this into a little empty sample pot I got from the Body Shop. For concealer, I use the Maybelline Anti Age Eraser Eye which is bloody brilliant at hiding those bags from late nights, in combination with the Maybelline Fit Me concealer for a bit more coverage.

The Revlon Photoready powder is PERFECT for setting your concealer without it flashing back too much in photography which is one of the reasons I bought this in the first place (it also has a little mirror in it which is useful).

Finally for skin I use the Tanya Burr Peachy Glow Palette as it has a bronzer, highlighter AND blush in it! Genius!

travel make up3

For eyes/eyebrows I use the Soap & Glory Brow Archery (all my packaging has rubbed off now lol) set with a Rimmel clear brow gel. The mascara of choice is a teeny tiny one, a little Benefit Roller Lash sample which is actually really good!

travel make up4

For tools, again I try to keep it down to a few key essentials – from Real Techniques my two favourite brushes and most USED brushes are the Buffing brush which I use for foundation and the Contour brush that is ideal for concealer under your eyes.

I always make sure I take my Tweezerman tweezers (you never know when you might need them), with a Laura Mercier cheek brush for powder and an FCUK brush which doubles for both bronzer and blusher :).

travel make up5

What essentials do you have in your travel make up bag?

I’d love to hear your essential products 🙂

I am always opening to swapping things out or finding a larger make up bag…I mean, no I’m not that’s a lie. Who said that?! *looks around*

Tanya Burr’s Peachy Glow Cheek Palette

I have been wanting to try this Tanya Burr Peachy Glow Cheek Palette for a long time – I was a very good girl because I saw this in Superdrug, DIDN’T buy it and then as I was still thinking about it the next time I went in I bought it as my reward for being good. Lol, I’m sure that’s how restraint works.

Out of Tanya’s make up and nails range the things I have loved the most have been the nail polishes – her formulas, colours and packaging have been on point and she has recently revamped them aswell and I’m a big fan of the new look range! I had never tried any of the palettes she has brought out and this was the one I had my eye on the most, so I thought I’d do a quick review on it!

tanya burr peachy glow

The thing I like the most about the palette first of all is how travel friendly it is – it’s light, it has a bronzer, highlight AND blush in one and it’s not too expensive so already it’s a worthwhile investment to add to your travel bag! This palette only costs £8 so it’s a bit of a bargain.

I quite like the simple packaging, it’s cute without being saccharine. It has a magnetic close I think, but even if it doesn’t they have got it just right. It has a nice, large mirror in it and you get a decent sized pan for all three of the powders.

tanya burr palette

When it comes to the actual formula of the powders, one thing I can definitely rave about is the pigmentation. You most definitely do not have to swirl your brush around in the blush to see it on your face. In fact, when I first tried this I literally touched my brush to the pan and then applied it to my face and there was enough product on it! (crazy)

So yep, you’ve got it, this palette may actually last you until you are 90 years old and resting your freshly manicured hands on your zimmerframe **what an image**

One thing I’m not massively keen on is that there is a lot of fall out with this powder. The shades are all beautiful – you have a bronzer called ‘Beach Bronze’, a blush called ‘Apricot Flush’ and a gorgeous highlight called ‘Champagne Shimmer’ *drools*. But when you do apply this with a brush, you have to tap off the excess product and there is ALOT. If you can get past this, you will be overwhelmed by the pigmentation and how blendable the powders are.

The highlight is lovely but it’s very finely milled like the Charlotte Tilbury Filmstar Bronze and Glow (at a fraction of the price) and I’d say the CT one has a more ‘candlelit’ vibe about it.

Have you tried anything from Tanya’s make up range?

Thanks for reading lovely readers,

My Current Fool Proof Skin Care Routine

current skincare

I am really happy with my skin care routine at the moment – it’s been the best routine for making sure spots stay away, keeping my skin glowing and making my foundation apply better. I try to stick to it as much as possible, consistency is a great way of making sure your skin doesn’t break out – knowing your skin well is the best way to tailor a skincare routine to it.

My skin care routine is split into Daytime and Night time 😀

DAYTIME

Firstly, I have to have moisturised lips using the Nivea moisturising cream – it’s a firm favourite and habit that I have inherited from my mum, we’ve always had a pot in our house since I was little!

Then I apply my eye cream which is the Body Shop Nutriganics Smoothing Eye Cream. This comes in a little pump dispenser, I love applying this to wake me up in the morning as it is feels cold when you smooth it on! I use my in finger to gently dab this in, then just let it sink in. After this I use the Body Shop Vitamin E Face mist and I spritz my face around 3 -4 times. This is just an extra layer of moisture as my skin is quite dry – it really needs as much moisture as it can get! I use the Benefit Total Moisture cream just incase I have any dry patches like around my nose or cheeks.

My main facial moisturiser of choice is the Clinique Moisture Surge Extended Thirst Relief gel cream which is ALL THE MOISTURE. It’s so good, I am on my third (?) pot of this now – seriously it lasts for like 6 months at a time and I use it erryday. At this point, my skin has had enough time to let all the moisturiser sink before applying make up!

NIGHT TIME

nighttime

After an evening shower I use the Nivea Cream, apply the Nutriganics Eye Cream and then I usually mix a blob of the Body Shop Drops of Youth Bouncy Sleeping Mask and the Kiehl’s Midnight Recovery Concentrate together to kind of make a power night cream which is full of all the good stuff – this I do every few days rather than every day as I don’t want to use up my Kiehl’s all in one go! (is expense, yo).

I hope you’ve enjoyed reading my newest (and best) skincare routine, have you used any of these products?

Thanks for reading,

MAC False Lashes Extreme Black Review

mac false lashes

Hello everybody!

I had this little MAC mini False Lashes Extreme Black mascara sitting in my Muji drawers for around a month before I realised I should really try it, as I’ve never had a MAC mascara before!

I’m a bit of a mascara addict…I tend to have a few open at the same time (sometimes they are better once they have dried up a bit!). My favourites at the moment are the Lash Sensational which I’ve mentioned more times than I’ve had Yazoo (which is a lot, chocolate). The products I tend to get the most from MAC are blushes, eyeshadows, eyeliners and lipsticks…I’d never even thought of trying a mascara from MAC simply because the drugstore do such good mascaras pennies in comparison.

The MAC False Lashes macara has a big fat brush – normally I would love this kind of mascara, but the more recent ones I have tried use more plastick-y brushes that are thinner.

mac false lashes extreme black 1

The formula is quite thin – I’m not sure if this is because it was a mini rather than a full size but I found that there wasn’t much in there! The fat brush probably took us most of the space in there lol. When I actually used the mascara, it was best for lengthening and separating rather than any volume. If they are aiming for an actual false lash effect, they are getting it bang on for length but I find with false lashes you get volume that you really can’t get with a basic mascara.

false lashes extreme black

This formula seemed quite dry – as you know there wasn’t much actual mascara in the mini that I had. I know that I wouldn’t bother getting a full size – when you can get two better drugstore mascaras for the price of one MAC mascara I don’t think it’s worth it!

What do you guys think, have you tried the MAC False Lashes Extreme Black mascara?

Thanks for reading 🙂
