The Battle of the Highlighters

Battle of the Highlighters

A few years ago, if someone said I’d be highlighting my face I’d be thinking of something neon pink that belongs in the stationary drawer. Fast forward to 2016 and highlighting is a vital step in most make up wearer’s routines.

When choosing your highlighter I would consider the following things:

  • The formula – cream or powder?
  • The glitteriness – do you want something subtle or IN YO FACE
  • How much you want to spend
  • Whether you want it to be warm toned or cool toned

These sound like scary decisions but actually it’s pretty simple – there are so many affordable highlighters nowadays that it doesn’t have to be a decision that bursts the seams of your purse *great mental image there*

My top picks are in the picture above!

For a iridescent but long lasting highlight I use the Benefit Girl Meets Pearl liquid highlighter which looks like a unicorns barfed it up (by that I mean it looks FABULOUS) – it’s more a cool toned lilac filled highlighter that you can just dab along the high points of your cheeks and then dot down the centre of your nose if you like. This is a click up dispenser bottle and this is a great, tidy way of using it.

For a more subtle highlight that costs a little more (but you get contour too) you could go to Charlotte Tilbury and opt for the Filmstar Bronze and Glow. This medium toned highlight in the duo is SO finely milled it’s really beautiful. Sometimes I wonder if the highlight is TOO finely milled but maybe it’s just me who wants to look like a glitter ball. Lol.

Finally, for the most glitzy highlight you can go for the MAC Soft and Gentle Mineralise Skin Finish. This is probably my favourite highlighter and in my mind I guess I call it the ‘Going Out Highlighter’ lol. The glittery particles in this are larger than other highlights but this still creates a gorgeous gold toned glow on your cheekbones when applied with a feathery make up brush.

What’s your favourite highlighter?

Soap & Glory Thick & Fast Mascara – Anyone got RSI yet?!

Hi Everyone!

I have a review for you today – if you browse through my blog you might think that I’m obsessed with mascaras because I have a lot of review posts! Looking in my Muji drawers, there would be a whole WEALTH of evidence to send me to Mascara Misuse Rehab (I have about 4 open at one time). The mascara I’ve been using recently is one that I’ve tried before, from Soap & Glory.

The Soap & Glory Thick & Fast *do you want any more ampesands* ‘Collagen’ mascara is, as far as I know, the main mascara line that Soap & Glory has. Aiming to ‘lay down volume and intensity’ using it’s V shaped brush, it claims to add thickness and volume without needing to work at it.

soap and glory mascara

As always with these kind of reviews, below I’ve added a before and after so you can see the effect of the mascara on my own lashes. (I also did my eyebrows lol)

soap and glory thick and fast mascara

The pros of this mascara are:

  • It is affordable compared to something like Benefit’s They’re Real, Bad Gal Lash or Roller Lash
  • It’s really well pigmented!
  • The brush feels nice to use
  • Gorgeous packaging! (well, I think so, something satisfying about the all over gold wand)
  • It is quite good at lengthening (see above picture)

The cons of this mascara are:

  • You may get Repetitive Strain Injury from having to go back and build up every single layer to get volume and length. Seriously, this is NOT THICK AND FAST IT IS THIN AND SLOW (-_-)
  • The mascara has a watery consistency compared to most others on the shelves
  • Did I mention it’s hard to build up?
  • Oh, and someone get Soap and Glory to supply a small robot with each purchase TO MOVE THE MASCARA UP AND  DOWN ON YOUR EYES TO SAVE YOUR WRIST

Aside from these points, I actually quite like it lol.

It’s not a pain to get off, it doesn’t feel wet on the lashes which is good (however Roller Lash does so you may want to steer clear) and it’s quite good at lengthening which I was surprised at.

What do you think, have you tried this Soap & Glory mascara before?

🙂

Until next time lovely readers!

Make Up Bag Essentials Part 2…

Hey Everyone!

So after completing my part 1 of the top essentials to have in your make up bag, NOW we move onto the second round :). This will include my favourite options for blusher, bronzer, highlighters and eyeliners!

If you select a product from each section in this post and my first post, you should have a pretty versatile make up kit which will see you through day time make up looks and it’s the kind of kit that’s perfect for someone just starting out with make up!

Let’s crack on with my favourite selection of…

BLUSHERS –

blusher

My first few blushes were actually MAC blushes, my favourites first of all were Mocha which is a dark browny pink which is very flattering…and MAC Dainty which is a mineralize blush with speckles of gold shimmer in it!

MAC blushes are quite pricey, so if you are looking for something versatile and a reasonable price you could try some of the Max Factor blushes, such as the Creme Puff powder blushes. If you’re a bit braver you could try the Max Factor cream blushes, which actually are really easy to use and last a really long time! The picture above shows you my favourite ever blush – the Tarte Amazonian Clay blush is beautiful – completely matte, easily buildable and the most flattering pink you will ever find!

blushers

BRONZERS –

My ultimate favourite bronzer is the NARS Laguna, which is pretty much a cult beauty blogger staple! However, if you are just starting out and are low on cash there are some great similar colour matches and alternatives. Be careful with bronzer colours that are too warm – these can look a bit too obvious on the face, so it might be easier to start with a cooler toned bronzer first :).

bronzers

For drugstore alternatives, you could try the Benefit Hoola Bronzer, which is one of the bronzers I tried when I first started out with Benefit products. It’s not too cool and not too warm, a light dusting of this over your hairline is a great way to bronze your face up in a subtle way.

Bourjois do an amazing bronzer which actually smells like chocolate! This is a brilliant bronzer to start off with, but if you are still a little scared of it you could opt for a bronze and blush combo where you can swirl both colours together lightly and use this just on the apples of the cheeks, like the Maybelline Dream Sun.

HIGHLIGHTERS –

I’d definitely advise that you try different texture highlighters such as creams and powders, so you know which type you like. My suggestion for you highlighter virgins out there is the Benefit Girl Meets Pearl, which is a nice easy twist up cream highlight. This is so easy to dab along the cheekbones and you can even use this with a little brush to apply on your brow arch too to create a lovely chic highlight.

However, I can’t leave out the MAC holy grail which is Soft & Gentle. This highlighter is the perfect irridescent gold, it’s a really finely milled powder which is great to dust on the high points of your face.

mac soft and gentle

EYELINERS –

Last but not least, we move onto eyeliners! So I’d advise that kohl eyeliners are the easiest way to add some definition to your lash line – you can add a thin line along your upper or lower lash line (in the outer third) and use a small eyeshadow brush to blend this out. This is a great way to create a simple smokey eye! I love using the Bourjois Colorband Pencil which is a great value product.

For liquid eyeliner, I started out with the usual Barry M liquid liners, Soap & Glory and then L’Oréal Superliner. The liquid eyeliner I’m obsessing over at the moment is the Maybelline Master Ink Matte Eyeliner, which is A M A Z I N G!!! It is as it says, completely matte, which makes it a brilliantly black formula!

eyelinersmaybelline

WOW that was a long post (sorry if you fell asleep half way through lol!)

I hope you enjoyed it, if you have any make up suggestions for me, let me know in the comments!

Love you all!

Benefit’s Roller Lash Mascara – Review

Hi Everyone!

I hope you’ve had a great weekend before real life starts again…(aka work)! One of my Christmas presents was a dinky little sample of the Benefit Roller Lash mascara, which I’m reviewing for you today (my sister Anisha bought it for me, she wanted to be included in the post and she’s making me a cup of tea so I think that’s a good deal).

My mascara relationships have been pretty stable throughout most of my make up life and I can almost reel off the mascaras like an exes list. Firstly, in my teen years my go to was Benefit’s Bad Gal Lash, then I went to the Maybelline Great Lash Mascara, then the Max Factor False Lash Effect. As I moved into my twenties I went onto the Soap & Glory Thick & Fast (which is way better than you’d expect) and since then I’ve always loved the Maybelline Lash Sensationalyou can read my review of that here!

The Benefit Roller Lash claims to ‘curl and lengthen’ using it’s Hook ‘n’ Roll brush…this brush is thin and long and looks pretty ordinary. I was surprised by how much it does actually lengthen. If you are looking for volume then I don’t think this is the mascara for you – I am lucky and have quite thickish lashes anyway so this isn’t a problem for me!

Benefit Roller Lash

Compared to the Lash Sensational, the brush is much thinner and I’m not entirely sure where the Hook and Roll aspects of it are!

As you can see from the before and after picture above, this mascara is great for lengthening and it’s very pigmented :). It actually performs very well on lower lashes as well, adding fibres and coating them thinly so that it’s not clumpy.

I think I would buy a full size version of this when my current mascara runs out (though I have a habit of having more than one on the go, oops). I’m not a massive fan of the packaging, though this is only the mini. The pastel pink doesn’t stand out much on the black background but I guess the test is of the product itself!

Have you guys tried the Roller Lash mascara? What did you think?

Thanks for reading guys 🙂

Why I’m Obsessed with Instagram…

If anyone follows me on Instagram, they’ll know that I quite like it. I post a lot and I usually go on it around 2 – 3 times a day. Go through my feed and double tap on anything that takes my fancy, it’s such an EASY way to explore photography and it fits right into our convenient, time limited day to day lifestyles.

It gives you the opportunity to experiment with photography and you don’t even need a big fancy camera in order to do it – I find my iPhone 6s camera is just right.

IMG_7606

One of my favourite things about Instagram is when you come across a great account that shows sped up make up tutorials. Make up feeds are my favourite kind to browse through and I’ve tried my hand at some close up pictures too but am still practising! For those I tend to ignore my front camera and use a mirror so that I can use my back camera instead which is much much better quality.

I like following large brands Instagram accounts because it’s a great way of finding out what their newest products and sale offers are – some of my favourites are Essie, Bombay Hair, Nars, Benefit and Make Up Geek (which I’ve just heard that you can get on Beauty Bay!).

Have you guys got any favourite Instagram accounts you can recommend following? 🙂

Some Black Friday Week Beauty Steals…

Hello you lovely people,

If you are browsing the internets then you will be 100% guaranteed to have heard two words. ‘Black’ and ‘Friday’ – the biggest shopping day of the year.

For beauty lovers, it’s great that we don’t get left out (unless you are in Beauty Anonymous where you are nursing your addiction). I don’t think I bought any beauty deals last year but I will most likely be having a browse this year – and I have been browsing a few for you!

I have chosen a few of the best deals I have seen which aren’t necessarily just for Black Friday – today I went to TK Maxx and was amazed to find that they stocked Stila – at prices that are around a SEVENTH of the usual retail price. Amaze.

blackfriday

Here are some of the best deals that I have seen so far:

HOUSE OF FRASER – ORIGINS GIN ZING EYE CREAM – was £20 NOW £16

This eye cream is a steal – I’ve wanted to try this for a very long time, I know it seems like a lot for an eye cream but trust me, this is a good price if you know what you want!

TK MAXX – REAL TECHNIQUES DUO FIBER BRUSH SET – rrp £23.99 NOW £16.00

I’m not entirely sure if this has had a reduction but from comparing this to usual prices on this kind of set, this price stands out as one of the best. I had no idea TK Maxx were so good on beauty brands!

DEBENHAMS – URBAN DECAY 10% OFF – SMOKEY PALETTE, was £38 NOW £34.20

If you are able to get an Urban Decay palette with a discount off the usual price, I would say that you have done yourself proud :). This palette has great versatile shades in it for creating day time AND night time looks and would work great as a gift for somebody.

OTHER THAN SPECIFIC PRODUCTS, THE WEBSITES I PLAN TO BE STALKING…

So, rather than bombard you with savings where for some you aren’t sure whether the RRP is real, I can tell you the websites where I will be looking for genuine deals…

Debenhams

The Body Shop

What are the best deals you’ve seen?

A Christmas Beauty Wishlist – Sephora

Oh my, Sephora. What have you done to my eyes. I have been browsing (as you do) on Sephora and I always tend to look and NEVER BUY. I think I have only ever ordered once from Sephora and I can’t even remember what it was that I bought lol.

This Christmas I have started looking for presents for others – you know, I’m selfless like that (tsch). But along the way, we have all been there when we see products that we think – hmm I would quite like that! So I thought I’d show you my coveted products here 🙂

SEPHORA COVETED LIST – GO!

nars

NARS ‘One Shocking Moment Cheek Palette’ – $69.00

BE STILL MY BEATING HEART – omfg this looks so good. I want this so bad! This would be the most versatile contour, highlight and blush palette AND it would have a massive mirror. What more do you need?

Kat Von D Ink Liner Trio – $25.00

A trio of amazing eye liners, you have a choice of brown, purple AND black! I’m just linking to this as ALL images I searched for are rubbish.

Deborah Lippman ‘Roses In The Snow Duo’ – $15.00

This nail polish set looks so lovely. The blushed rose colour looks like it would be very flattering and the glitter looks insane!

deblip

IN THE SALE!! Colourful Sequin Glitter – Sephora – $5

sephora

For a sale item, this looks great for the festive season and if you were to pack this onto the eyelid then it would be a perfect dramatic eyeshadow to turn heads (and eyes). 🙂

I hope you’ve enjoyed looking at the things I’ve loved drooling over at Sephora!

Have a lovely weekend everyone 🙂

The Body Shop Camomile Silky Cleansing Oil

Hi Everyone! 🙂

I have always loved certain products from The Body Shop – I think it’s one of those shops that have done really well to change with the times. Now shops have to concentrate on social media, online shopping AND maintain their physical stores. My favourite products of all time from The Body Shop are my wooden paddle hair brush, the Almond Hand Cream and the Brazilian Hair Serum.

Now, I have another product to add to that list and it is the Camomile Silky Cleansing Oil. This is something I’ve wanted to invest in for a very long time – I soon realised that this is the perfect cleanser to leave in the shower to use once I have taken off the majority of my make up after a long day at work.

bodyshopcamomile

It comes in a handy pump bottle and it claims to be able to take off all make up including waterproof make up. It costs £11.00 but I’ve heard a lot of bloggers saying that one bottle lasts them AGES. (Btw it feels really good to do a good old product review, feels like I haven’t done one in ages). When I went to The Body Shop there was a buy one get one half price offer on skincare, so this was great!

This handy product now lives in my shower, I like using it best when I shower in the evening. I wouldn’t say it takes off ALL make up, because when I have used Benefit They’re Real mascara in the day and I want to remove it – this doesn’t take it ALL off. What I’ve found is that if I just use this to take it off I end up with ever so slight panda eyes when I come out of the shower – which I can see when I run a cotton bud under my eyes.

However, if I use a make up wipe to take off the majority of my make up before I get in the shower then the Camomile cleanser works great.

You are meant to apply this dry, then use some water to emulsify this oil as you rub it into your skin. I find that the scent is really calming and natural – this I liked. I like that it isn’t a thick oil either – it is most definitely a silky consistency and this is a great feature!

I do think my skin feels great after I use this, the only let down is that I don’t think it will remove all eye make up. At the same I don’t think it would feel as natural on the skin if the formula was stronger :).

I’m really glad I bought this, as I wanted a cleanser that I could use to make sure all of my make up is off after using wipes – so I’m really pleased!!

Have you tried anything within the Camomile range from The Body Shop?

Leave me a comment if so!

I hope you enjoyed this post, I’ll be posting a lot more in the run up to Christmas so keep your eyes peeled!

Thanks,

April Favourites!

IMG_3705

It is almost the end of April! How quick has that gone, we have had some glorious weather recently and it’s got me looking forward to summer and heatwaves and barbecues and YAY. I thought I’d bring you my favourite beauty products of April for you to browse at your leisurely leisure.

I’ve been reaching for this black Bourjois Colorband (where is the ‘U’, Americans?!) quite a lot recently, as a nice smudgy eyeliner across the top of my lash line. It’s quite blendable but it does stay put, you won’t find this transferring onto your eyelids.

Everyday I’ve been using the Shu Uemura Eyelash Curlers, which have changed the way my eyelashes look. I’ve always been quite lucky and had pretty long eyelashes, but these curlers almost make them look vertical from the root (and not in a weird way). They are so good, and I don’t think I’ll buy any other type of curler again!

Onto eyebrows, this Maybelline Browdrama in Dark Brown has replaced my clear mascara that I was using to set my brows. This is basically like a tinted mascara, with a ball type brush which makes it easy to flick through the eyebrows to add more fibres and make brows look more natural. This is a great colour too, not too warm toned and it’s great for very dark hair.

aprilfave2

The Miracle Touch Max Factor Creamy Blush has been a firm favourite of mine for a few months now. I love the finish it gives when it’s just dabbed onto the cheeks, it’s the perfect product for summer. It gives you a glow, it’s not drying and the colour makes you look really healthy!

Finally, I have been loving the Benefit Total Moisture Facial Cream, which comes in the cutest tiniest pot ever (which I will be definitely keeping when it runs out). I use this on any dry patches I have AFTER I have applied the Clinique Moisture Surge Thirst Relief gel cream, I find this is a great combination to keep my skin hydrated throughout the day.

What are your favourites for April?
